Gemini 1.5 vs Claude 3.5: A Developer’s Perspective
WRITTEN BY
Adrian Griffith
The landscape of Large Language Models (LLMs) is shifting weekly. For a long time, GPT-4 was the undisputed king. But recently, we've seen massive strides from Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. At Paladin, we don't play favorites; we play for performance.
The Context Window War
Gemini 1.5 Pro changed the game with its massive context window. Being able to ingest entire codebases or long PDF contracts without sophisticated RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) chunking strategies is a massive developer convenience.
However, Claude 3.5 Sonnet has shown remarkable "reasoning" capabilities, particularly in coding tasks and following complex, multi-step instructions without getting confused.
"We found that for pure creative writing and nuance, Claude often feels more human. But for data extraction and multi-modal analysis, Gemini is a powerhouse."
Our Architecture
We now employ a router-based architecture. We use lighter, faster models for simple classification tasks and route complex reasoning queries to Claude 3.5 or Gemini 1.5 Pro depending on the input modality.
If the input involves images or video, Gemini is our go-to. If it requires complex semantic understanding of text nuances, we often lean towards Claude. This hybrid approach ensures our clients get the best of all worlds.
